JESUS CHRIST - THE ONLY WAY, THE ONLY TRUTH AND THE ONLY LIFE (JOHN 14:6)

Dear Members in Christ,

Jesus Christ - the only way, the only truth and the only life (John 14:6)

Just last year, a well-known religious leader of a so-called Christian church expressed his view of salvation. His view is that there are many ways to God. Just as there are many languages in the world, the analogy communication may be applied to soteriology i.e. that there are various ways one can interact with God. There is no uniqueness in the pathway to attain peace with God. However, the Bible tells us otherwise. The Lord Jesus Christ in His discourse with His disciples told them of eternal life, and that He will prepare a heavenly place for them, a place with many mansions. 

“In my Father's house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.” John 14:2, 3

When the Disciple Thomas asked the Lord Jesus, how are they to find this place when none amongst them know the way. The Lord Jesus’ answer points to Himself being the only way the truth and the life. In this world, with its various faiths and beliefs, the Bible gives us a clear instruction on the way to God. That way is only through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour.

A. The declaration of our Lord Jesus to His disciples 

When the doubting disciple asked the Lord how they are expected to know the way, the Lord Jesus answered the Disciple Thomas with these words.

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

The words of the Lord Jesus Christ is absolutely clear. He is the way to God, and He is the one who gives the truth of God. The Scriptures record for us the clear statement that there is no other way to God. We have to admit based on biblical testimony that any person who declares a way of salvation other than that through the atonement work of the Lord Jesus Christ is declaring a false Gospel.

The declaration of the Lord Jesus makes three important statements. The Lord Jesus is the only way to the heavenly presence of God. He is the way because, by His sacrifice on the cross, He has obtained the forgiveness of sins for all who trusts in His finished work of atonement.

Jesus Christ declares Himself as the truth. He is the truth because He had preached the good news. Luke 4:18 records the testimony of the Lord Jesus in preaching the Gospel of Salvation, “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,”

The Lord Jesus is the Life because His work and ministry brings life to those who trusts in Him. Other than this message, the Lord Jesus also declared to the disciples that He is the “resurrection and the life”, He is the bread of life. The Bible tells us of the Lord Jesus that “In him was life; and the life was the light of men.” (John 1:4)

B. The Apostle Peter declared that salvation comes only by faith in the Lord Jesus Christ

After the turmoil and upheaval of the crucifixion of the Lord Jesus, the Apostle Peter went forth with the great message for all those who gathered for Pentecost in Jerusalem.

“Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner. Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Acts 4:10-12

The spokesman for the band of Apostles, the Apostle Peter, boldly declared that there is no salvation other than through Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour who died on the cross of Calvary. Salvation and the way to God via any other ways or means is a false message. No servant of God would confuse the works of the world with the true gift of salvation in Christ Jesus alone.

Dearly beloved, let us be spiritually discerning. We are living in the end times, when the Lord Jesus had warned in Matthew 24 that false christs and false messengers will abound. Let us pray that Calvary Jaya will be a spiritually awakened church, standing for the truth of God, and serving only Jesus our true Lord and Saviour. Amen.
