REMEMBER THE WORKS OF THE LORD (PSALM 77:11-12)

Dear Members in Christ,

Remember the works of the Lord (Ps 77:11-12)

Today, we remember God’s goodness to Calvary Jaya in sustaining our Chinese Congregation. It has been 39 years since the inception of the Chinese Congregation. They have been worshipping God in Calvary Jaya and we thank God for preserving this congregation. As we celebrate the 39th anniversary, we reflect and think upon God’s goodness to His people. He calls them and saves them by the atonement of His only begotten Son, He calls them His own people. God feeds and sustains them through the years. We remember the words of the psalmist about what God has done for His people.

“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old. I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” Psalm 77:11-12

In this psalm, the psalmist Asaph prays to God for help as he meditates upon God’s mighty works in the history of His people. He was in a situation where he was overwhelmed, and he felt the great need for God to intervene in his life and the life of the nation. In the midst of his prayer, he cries out that he will remember the work of the LORD, and he will meditate upon God’s marvelous doings. We thank God that we are blessed with good times. Whether in good times or otherwise, we should always praise God for His work amongst His people. Through 39 years, God has blessed the Chinese Congregation with the witness of His Word, and God has preserved the congregation, He has fed and provided all its needs.

A. Remember God’s goodness to His people

The psalmist in Psalm 77 says, “I will remember the works of the Lord.” In this psalm, the psalmist begins by recounting how he had called to God in his need, and God answered His prayers.

“I cried unto God with my voice, even unto God with my voice; and he gave ear unto me.” Psalm 77:1

When God’s people are in need, they cry to God in prayer. In this psalm, the psalmist cries to God for help in trouble, and God answered his prayers. God had granted him a great deliverance, and the psalmist pens these words to praise God for His goodness.

“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.” Psalm 77:11

When we remember the years that have passed, we remember God’s goodness to the Chinese Congregation. At the start of the ministry, there was a need for preachers, and God provided for the congregation. In the early years, God brought in visiting preachers and pastors from Singapore to feed the flock weekly. This the Lord provided that there might be a witness for the gospel in the Petaling Jaya area. In the years following, God provided for a full-time servant in the person of Rev Lee Kim Shong to care for His flock. When there was a need for people to serve, God provided for willing hands to serve. Initially, the pro-tem committee was setup for this purpose, and in later years a Session was formed.

Dearly beloved, God is always good to His people, God will provide for them and He will supply them for their needs. He will protect His flock and keep His sheep safe. In this anniversary occasion, let us remember to give thanks for God’s goodness.

B. Remember to tell others of God’s goodness

The psalmist also encouraged the people not just to remember God’s goodness, but also to proclaim God’s goodness. Why was there a need to declare and proclaim God’s goodness? The reason is simply because it is encouraging to the faithful, and it is glorifying God. Therefore, the Psalmist says,

“I will meditate also of all thy work, and talk of thy doings.” Psalm 77:12

In this verse, the psalmist talks about meditating upon God’s work. We should as God’s people meditate and think about God’s work in our lives. On this 39th year, we think about the goodness God has brought upon the Chinese congregation. To this day, God has preserved the congregation. God has provided for Session members and for His servants to serve this congregation. God has kept the people in the congregation in good spiritual health and in soundness of mind. For this, we must be ready to testify of God’s blessings.

Brothers and sisters, let us pray that God may continue to bless us, and that we, His people, must remember to tell others of God’s goodness. This is our witness and testimony. Dearly beloved, take time to testify to your friends and family members of God’s goodness to Calvary Jaya. Invite them to come and hear the preaching of God’s Word. May God’s name be praised, and may He bless and keep us all. Amen!

In His Service,
Rev. Lim Seh Beng, Pastor
