Sarawak Missions Trip

21-25 August 2006

Objectives

To visit and encourage brethren at existing outreaches in Miri, Sibu and Kuching.

Activities

Miri (city with the emblem of a sea-horse) | 21-22 August 2005

God is merciful, the haze in Miri was not so bad. He caused the showers of blessing to descend on this city. Preacher Harrison and wife, Charlene were waiting at the airport when I arrived.

Pr. Harrison has been labouring in this part of the world for about 5 years. Currently, they are worshipping at the third level of a shoplot at Taman Tunku. The present sanctuary is sufficient to cater for about 40 people. Miri church is made up of the Kayan and Iban tribal natives. The Lord provided them a van to transport people for meetings. About 15 adults and 5 children attend the Sunday service and Sunday School every Lord’s Day.

An Iban couple, Majang and Santi, has been helping Pr. & Mrs. Harrison in the Lord’s Day ministry since a year ago. Faithful co-labourers in the ministry are hard to find these days. How God has blessed the Miri ministry with faithful hands.

We visited a family at night and I preached from the book of Psalms to bring them encouragement. Some relatives came to join in the family worship gathering. Unbelief is widespread among professing believers due to the lack of teaching God’s Word. Many do not attend church service especially the men, who are the head of families. May we uphold them in our weekly prayers.

In the second night, we had Bible study and prayer meeting. About 20 souls turned up. We had the seniors, the in-betweens and the juniors. It is rare to see such combination in our prayer meeting. We opened the Bible to Daniel 1 of which I touched on the faith of Daniel and his uncompromised position in the corrupt world then. Pr Harrison helped to interpret. After that we took turns to pray. When the church gathers to pray, how blessed she is. Do you come to participate in the prayer meeting?

Let us pray for Pr Harrison and other faithful preachers that they may be used by God to enlighten His people to walk in the right path. May God raise up more faithful preachers and teachers of His Word that His people will be nourished spiritually.

Sibu (town with the emblem of a white swan) | 23 August 2005

Pr. Ling Soon Ing is a local who began the pastoral ministry 16 years ago. By God’s help, he and his wife gathered the flock by doing door-to-door evangelism. In the midst of much unbelief in this town, Pr Ling is one of the few who hold on to the time-honoured biblical truth and preach it faithfully.

Sibu church has a regular attendance of about 20 – 30 worshippers every Lord’s Day. Many of his congregation are teenagers. They are attentive in learning the scriptures and supportive of the ministry. Some of these young people have gone to universities in Kuching, Kota Kinabalu or Kuala Lumpur.

Brother Tiong Kung Toi who worshipped with us a few years ago, had graduated from a private college in PJ. He has gone back to Sibu to assist in the transportation and teaching ministry. In contrast, many young men have decided to stay put in the cities.

During our night meeting, about 20 people came to hear the Word of God. The congregation is Mandarin speaking. Brother Kung Toi chaired the meeting while I preached on the rise and fall of world powers and the eternality of Christ’s kingdom. We thank God for this ministry. Pr Ling came to join the Bible Presbyterian movement in 2001. He needs much encouragement. To maintain a faithful ministry in the midst of unbiblical ecumenism in the church circle is very hard, more so for a small church. Will you pray for them?

Kuching (city with the emblem of cats) | 24-25 August 2005

I arrived in Kuching at Thursday noon. I tried to visit a former FEBC collegemate, Pr. Marilyn. But she was involved in an intensive training course. Anyway, I had fellowship with another fellow preacher who drove me to visit some relatives in his hometown called Lundu. It is one hour’s drive from the city. Over there, we were warmly received by the relatives and we were treated with home-cooked delicacies in a simple house. The weather was warm but the people were warmer. Pray that they will receive God’s salvation in Christ one day.

I caught the 5.45pm flight to Kuala Lumpur. The flight was delayed in arrival for about half an hour. Thankfully we touched down safely. Mr & Mrs Bernard Hoe were at the airport to bring me home. The Lord blessed Klang Valley with the abundance of rain which is much longed for in Sarawak. They are experiencing drought now. In certain areas, drinking water became salty. Pray for our Sarawakian brethren.
